Pen Argyl High School held its annual Mini-THON on March 15. Last year Mini-THON raised $36,374.45 for children with pediatric cancer. The Mini-THON Leadership team worked hard to organize a fun time for all those who attended Mini-THON this year. Some of the activities included mattress surfing, dodgeball, volleyball, and karaoke.
Tegan Ballas, senior, said, “Mini-THON is an event we hold at the high school that raises money for Four Diamonds, which is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping pediatric cancer patients and their families! The money we raise helps to cover the costs of medical bills, gives families food and gas vouchers, and goes toward medical research. The money Mini-THONs across PA and surrounding states raised last year went toward a clinical trial and research study for a new drug that fights Neuroblastoma!”
Maddie Dietz, sophomore, said, “Mini-THON is a time where we can get everyone together for a whole day and make the most of it by raising money to help conquer childhood cancer with lots of dancing and fun activities. I feel it helps bring the school together while also allowing everybody to have lots of fun and show their support.”
Not only does Pen Argyl High School raise money for Four Diamonds, they also host other events to raise even more money.
Ballas said, “Our Mini-THON does a bunch of fundraisers throughout the year! We have our annual Powderpuff game, our Paint Nights, Dine and Donates, and Stall Day! We also participate in Push Week which registers people for DonorDrive so more donations can come through there!”
The leadership team is made up of students from all four grades, so how long they have been a part of leadership varies.
Ballas, said, “I was welcomed to the leadership team as a freshman and started my sophomore year, making this my third and final year with the Mini-THON Leadership Team, I was inspired to join the club by some alumni that graduated a few years ago. They really helped me work my way up to apply for leadership at the end of the freshman year!”
Dietz said, “I was a part of the Mini-THON club for one year and this is my first year on the Leadership Team. The first thing that inspired me was the girls involved in Leadership and I admired what they did so I wanted to join the club. After joining the club I wanted to get involved with the Leadership team because they all work so hard to make such an important event happen and work all year long and I just felt it would be a great fit for me. Also the idea of helping people and knowing doing a small part of raising money can make a difference.”
In order to attend Mini-THON, students raised at least fifty dollars in order to attend Mini-THON. At the end of the night leadership revealed the total amount everyone raised which was $42,938.37 which is the second highest total Pen Argyl High School has ever raised for pediatric cancer. The money Pen Argyl High School raised goes towards the Four Diamonds organizations and helps pay children who are battling cancer hospital bills. Together, we can make an amazing difference in the lives of the children battling the monster that is cancer. For the kids!
