The 2024 World Series took place from October 25 to November 2 and featured the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. At the end of five games, the Dodgers came out of the series as World Series Champions.
Game one of the series was an exciting one. The Dodgers started out the game with the lead. Soon after that, Giancarlo Stanton, outfielder, hit a home run with one runner on base to give the lead to the Yankees.
The next few innings went scoreless until Mookie Betts, outfielder, hit a ball to the outfield which allowed Shohei Ohtani, designated hitter, to score a run.
Juan Soto, outfielder, hit a ball to the outfield, which caused confusion due to a fan reaching over the fence and grabbing the ball. This resulted in Soto reaching first.
The game had to go to extra innings when the ninth went scoreless. In the tenth, Anthony Volpe, shortstop, hit a ball through the infield allowing for Jazz Crisholm Jr, center fielder,. to score a run from third.
To end this close game, Freddie Freeman, first baseman, stepped up to the plate, with two outs and bases loaded. On the first pitch Freeman smacked the ball for a walk-off grand slam. The Dodgers took the win in game one 6-3.
In game two of the series the Dodgers started their new pitcher, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who only allowed one run in eight innings. However, Tommy Edman, second baseman, Teoscar Hernandez, outfielder, and Freddie Freeman had scored for the Dodgers, resulting in a 4-1 lead. Later in the inning, Ohtani stole a base, causing a partial shoulder dislocation, and it is unknown if he will be ready for game three on Monday. The Yankees scored another point in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough. The Dodgers won their second game 4-2.
Game three took place on October 28. To start out the game, Freddie Freeman hit a homerun with one runner on base, which allowed the Dodgers to take a 2-0 lead. The next two innings went scoreless until Mookie Betts hit a ball to right field, allowing Tommy Edman to score a run. This run brought the Dodgers up 3-0. In sixth inning Kike Hernandez hit a ball to centerfield, which brought Gavin Lux home. The Dodgers lead 4-0. As a last resort, the Yankees center fielder, Alex Verdugo hit a homerun in the ninth inning with one runner on base, making the final score 4-2, Dodgers win.
Game four took place on October 29. This was one of the most important games in the series. If the Dodgers won, they won it all; if the Yankees won, they were still in it.
This game started with another home run by Freddie Freeman with a runner on base, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead early in the game. The Yankees’ Alex Verdugo had a base hit resulting in him being out, but it allowed Anthony Volpe to get home, making the score 2-1.
Anthony Volpe then hit a home run with bases loaded at the end of the third to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead. The next inning went scoreless. At the start of the fifth inning, Will Smith hit a home run.
The Dodgers stayed alive by challenging a call made by the umpire. This reversed call allowed the Dodgers to score, making it a one run game. The Yankees went on to score several times resulting in a final score of 11-4.
In game five, the Dodgers needed to get a win. The Yankees scored four runs early in the game making a Dodgers win look impossible.
A mistake of not having a defender on first base cost the Yankees a run by the Dodgers. Freddie Freeman then had a base hit to center field allowing two runners to get home, bringing the Yankees lead down to two runs. Then, by a shortly missed catch the Dodgers tied the game by getting two runners home.
Juancarlo Stanton scored another run for the Yankees, giving them their lead back.
The Dodgers answered back with a skillful play to get a runner home.
Gavin Lux hit a fly ball to center field. Lux got out, but this allowed a runner to get on third, closing in on home plate.
The next play, a base hit by Mookie Betts allowed the third base runner to get home, allowing the Dodgers to take the lead.
With that last run, the Dodgers won the World Series for the first time since 2020.
As for the Yankees, the notoriously successful franchise has failed to bring a World Series win to New York since 2009.
