As seniors are graduating this year and planning their future, many are applying to colleges and trade schools.
What is traditionally one of the most exciting times in a student’s life is also one of the most expensive.
Pen Argyl High School provides many opportunities for students to ease that financial burden in the form of numerous scholarships available to seniors.
Eric Sampson, guidance counselor, said, “I would love every senior to check out the scholarships no matter what their secondary school plans are.”
Scholarships are there to help provide financial support to students furthering their education whether at a four year institution, a junior college, or a trade school.
Seniors should also look into national scholarships through websites like CollegeBoard Scholarship Search, BrokeScholar, College Treasure, Fastweb, Scholarship America, Financial Aid Finder and Unigo.
Sampson said Fastweb is the best website that he has seen for scholarships.
Fastweb is a free and easy to apply program that compiles many scholarships for both college and trade school.
Addison Manning, senior, said, “I really want to apply to all the different scholarships the school has sent out.”
Pen Argyl offers roughly a couple dozen scholarships. Anyone can stop by the guidance office anytime after the list is released in February to get scholarship information.
Alex Cleffi, senior, said, “I plan on doing as many as I can, since it’s very helpful. I found my scholarships through family and friends recommended me to apply for or through the guidance office where many seniors can find them.”
Examples of scholarships offered are from Pen Argyl Area Music Association ($500), Pen Argyl Alumni Association Scholarships ($1,000) and Northampton County Conservation District Scholarship ($2,000).
The biggest tip when searching and applying for scholarships is to pay close attention to deadlines. Most scholarships are due in the month of April.
