This year, Peyton Dewalt, a senior who has shown dedication, hard work, and a strong commitment to success has officially been named valedictorian of the Class of 2026.
Throughout her high school career, she has stood out not only for her academic achievements, but also for her involvement in school activities and her positive impact on others.
The race for valedictorian this year was incredibly close, with several students performing at an exceptionally high level.
In the end, it came down to the smallest of margins, showing just how competitive and dedicated this graduating class has been. Every grade, every assignment, and every effort over the past four years played a role in the final outcome.
Guidance counselor Eric Sampson said, “The Class of 2026 has been very competitive. We have four students with over a 106 average.”
This tight competition not only highlights the hard work of the valedictorian, but also reflects the overall strength and determination of the entire senior class.
With a GPA of 107.081, the closest student behind her had a GPA of 107.058, meaning she earned the title by just .023 of a point.
When Dewalt learned she was named valedictorian, she said she was both surprised and overjoyed.
Although honored by the achievement, Dewalt explained that she sees it as “more of a stepping stone” toward her future goals and success beyond high school.
Earning the title of valedictorian is no easy task. It takes years of focus, late nights studying, and the willingness to push through challenges. For Dewalt, one of the biggest challenges she faced was balancing academics with extracurricular activities and work outside of school. She said learning how to manage her time and prioritize important responsibilities helped her succeed throughout high school.
Dewalt also participated in Varsity Swimming, Mock Trial as co-captain, FBLA as president, Knights’ Order, orchestra, trivia club, National Honor Society, and Reading Olympics. She also participated in club swimming and volunteered as a Junior Volunteer at the Blue Mountain Community Library.
After graduation, Dewalt plans to attend William & Mary College to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics.
She is enrolled in the school’s Joint Degree Program, which will allow her to spend two years at William & Mary and two years at the University of St. Andrews.
Looking back on her high school experience, Dewalt encourages underclassmen to get involved in activities and clubs, even if they seem outside their comfort zone.
“You’re bound to have some wins and losses,” she said, “so you might as well try to make the most of your four years here.”
