The Pen Argyl Area music department took their Virginia Beach trip this past April 17 to April 20. This event consisted of competitions and a variety of activities.
Before the trip, everyone in the music program participated in three practices where they all learned how to march and perform the specific pieces. The chorus practiced during Green and White blocks. Those who took part in this trip represented PAHS as they competed against other schools’ music ensembles.
The chorus from PAHS sang the songs “Sing Joy” and “Into the West” while the band performed an American Medley at the adjudications.
“I was very excited to go with the students and see them perform their marching band parade,” said Steffani Smith, music teacher.

Marshall Shank, freshman, and Taylor Rose, junior, rehearsed for the adjudication.
While the competition stayed the focal point of the trip, many students were found participating in other activities around Virginia.
Carlena Alfred, senior, said that she "loved singing songs from the movie Pitch Perfect on the bus with everyone."
Junior Brody Hannick said, “I think the most memorable part of the trip was the Williamsburg Ghost Tour. My group and I all had a great time walking around the colonial era town. When the ghost tour started I was getting a kick out of a friend who was genuinely getting freaked out by the stories we were being told.”
Trips like these help to build a stronger sense of community at PAHS throughout different grades levels.
“It also helps to expose students to different styles and levels outside of what they are used to. I think trips like these are important to promote the fun that people can have while making music,” said Hannick.
The music department has traditionally taken this trip to VA Beach every other year. The trip went on a brief hiatus during the Covid era and returned two years ago with much success. In the alternating years, music students visit New York City to see a Broadway show.
